CAPTAIN

The Captain (also called the Master) is in overall command of the ship, and is in charge of the officers and crew. Ship’s Captains may command vessels such as passenger liners, tankers, cargo ships, car carriers, livestock carriers, large fishing vessels, ferries and tugs.

Officers on a ship are Deck Officers or Engineer Officers. Deck Officers are responsible for navigation at sea and for loading and unloading cargo while at port. Loading cargo on a ship is called stowing.

What does the Captain Do?
The Captain is a Deck Officer, and ensures the safe navigation of the ship at sea and supervises the safe operation of the ship in port and at anchor, coordinating the activities of the deck crew and controlling the stowing and unloading of cargo.

The Ship’s Captain is in charge of the following tasks:

  1. Ensuring the Deck Officers and crew keep watch from the bridge in watches (shifts) while at sea
  2. Determining the position of the ship and other vessels and obstructions by using navigational aids
  3. Supervising the work done by the crew
  4. Performing medical and/or first-aid treatment for the ships crew. Making sure all safety regulations are observed
  5. Observing and recording in the daily logbook the ship’s course, any alterations, details relating to weather conditions and the ship’s position
  6. Coordinating cargo loading and discharge operations and maintenance
  7. Updating charts and other nautical publications
  8. Making sure that all necessary documentation has been produced.

The captain and the ship’s officers may be required to work or remain on duty for long periods. Generally they work in watches of eight hours on duty and eight hours off duty over a 24-hour period.
