 LESSON 4  Ports

INTRODUCTION

Introduction

Merchant ships need to load and unload their cargo and of course the crew have to get on and off as well. Drivers have to be able to take their cars on to ferries and drive off at the destination. Also, passengers need to be able to get on and off cruise ships.

Ports are designed so that ships can dock safely and carry out these operations. Ports usually have cranes and other equipment to load and unload cargo. Cargo is often transported in large metal boxes called containers.

The Follow the Fleet ships visit many ports. Find out about some of them here.
